Environment and Sustainability Policy

Life Lessons celebrates big ideas for living better. The future of our planet, the benefits of nature, protecting the environment, and sustainability are topics that form an integral part of conversation and debates on the Life Lessons stage. It's important to us that we implement as many practices as possible at the event and during our planning, ensuring that we’re living and leading by example.

Our responsibility

The team at Life Lessons are responsible for ensuring that the Sustainability policy is implemented across the 2021 event, with every department having a responsibility to ensure that the aims and values of the policy are met.

Our core values & aims:

  • Value and respect of the environment
  • Commitment to sustainable development
  • Increase employee awareness on the environment
  • Incorporate sustainable factors into any business decisions made

Reduce, reuse, recycle

For 2021 we are working towards future goals and ambitions for sustainable action. We are implementing this through:

  • Working with our waste contractor to create a detailed waste management policy, instructing how to separate waste correctly and recycling wherever possible by identifying suitable facilities and collection methods. There will be recycling points throughout the event site for the public to dispose of their waste in a responsible manner.
  • Working with our traders and exhibitors to encourage the use of compostable take-away food containers, cups and cutlery rather than single-use plastic products.
  • Making all our traders and exhibitors aware of the Sustainability Policy and waste management policy.
  • We’ll be choosing repurposed, recycled or natural materials wherever possible instead of plastics.
  • Where we’re creating products, we’ll do so with the intention of storing and reusing them for future events, for example branding and decor.
  • We’ll be hiring equipment whenever possible.

No more singletons!

We are banning our caterers from using single-use plastic serve-wear including plates, cutlery and coffee cups on our event site. Instead, we actively encouraging the use of compostable or reusable items instead.

We are encouraging all caterers, bars and traders against the sale of plastic water bottles, and we strongly advise cans instead.

We advise all of our bars to replace single-use plastic cups with reusable cups. If any type of plastic is used, it must be marked as 100% recyclable.

Across site, we are providing drinking water points and are encouraging visitors to bring their own refillable water bottles and reusable coffee cups (if covid guidelines permit the use of reusable coffee cups).

Decreasing our carbon footprint

We use additional demand technologies to synchronise generator sets to meet demand which varies across the site through the day and night

Although we have to keep some generators on throughout the event, we carefully monitor performance and take as many steps as we can, to limit our usage. As an example, we have converted to LED lighting were appropriate, to reduce fuel consumption and our carbon footprint

Reduce the need to travel unnecessarily and be more travel wise with collecting or delivering site resources

Work with traders and exhibitors in reducing emissions during the build and break of the event – by promoting courier sharing and 1 car per exhibitor rule
